Über Sghertso

Wiener Musiker kennen die Scherzfrage: Was ist das Gegenteil von Scherzo? Im Wiener Dialekt eine Verneinung: „S‘ghert net so.“ – also so nicht! Der Titel Sghertso will sagen, dass die Interpretation im gegebenen Rahmen jedenfalls richtig ist.

Das Stück entstand für Susanne Werpechowski und ihre Teilnahme am österreichischen Jugendwettbewerb Prima la musica. Vorgaben waren der knappe Zeitrahmen des Vorspielprogramms und die Orgel im Dom zu Feldkirch (Disposition auf Seite VI in den Noten). Die Corona-Pandemie verhinderte die Durchführung des Wettbewerbs. Susanne Werpechowski spielte schließlich die Uraufführung im Mai 2021 in Wien an der Orgel der Jesuitenkirche (Disposition auf Seite VI in den Noten). Die Videoaufzeichnung diente als Teil der Jahresprüfung im Vorbereitungslehrgang an der Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität Wien.

Sghertso folgt den heiteren kurzen Toccaten in der österreichischen Orgelmusik unserer Zeit von Augustinus Franz Kropfreiter (Toccata francese) und Peter Planyavsky (Toccata alla Rumba). Das Hauptmotiv entwickelt sich aus  einem Ton und führt zu ungewöhnlichen Satzweisen, die in eine improvisierte Kadenz mit notierten Elementen münden. Im Tutti kehrt die Reprise des Hauptmotivs zum Ausgangston zurück.

Viennese musicians know the joke question: What is the opposite of Scherzo? In Viennese dialect, the answer is the negation: „S‘ghert net so“ – you can‘t do it that way! The title Sghertso means that the interpretation is at any rate correct in the given framework.

The piece was created for Susanne Werpechowski and her participation in the Austrian youth competition Prima la musica. The requirements were to meet the tight time frame of the audition program as well as create a piece well-suited for the organ in Feldkirch Cathedral (stop list on page VI). The coronavirus pandemic prevented the competition from taking place. Finally, Susanne Werpechowski premiered the piece in May 2021 on the organ at the Vienna Jesuit Church (stop list on page VI). The video recording was part of the annual examination in the preparatory course at the Music and Arts Private University Vienna.

Sghertso follows the cheerful short toccatas of Austrian contemporary organ music by Augustinus Franz Kropfreiter (Toccata francese) and Peter Planyavsky (Toccata alla Rumba). The main motif develops from a single note  and leads to unusual textures, culminating in an improvised cadenza with notated elements. With full organ, the recapitulation of the main motif returns to the initial note.
